What the watch app stores
Your catches (time, position, species, length, weight, released or kept, air pressure, moon, temperature and wind), your trips, saved spots, records and settings are stored only on your watch. A trip is also saved as a Fishing activity in your Garmin Connect account (track, one lap per catch, and the catch count, released fish and biggest fish), the same way as any other activity you record; Garmin's privacy policy applies to that. There is no Hookset server and no Hookset account.
What leaves the watch
- Weather comes from Garmin Connect through your phone (Garmin's own weather service).
- Tides (beta): on coastal spots, the app asks Open-Meteo Marine for sea level heights at your position rounded to 0.1° (about 10 km), through your phone. Open-Meteo receives that rounded position and, like any website, your phone's IP address; nothing else about you. You can turn tides off in the app's settings.
- Your catches leave the watch only when you choose to: in a QR code you open on your phone (below). The app has no analytics and no ads.
QR export and the trip viewer
The QR code holds a link to hooksetwatch.com/t with the trip after the # sign. Browsers never send this part of the address to a server, so the trip is not uploaded anywhere: the page decodes it in your browser. To join a trip split into several codes, the browser keeps the scanned parts in its local storage for 30 days. The map loads tiles from OpenStreetMap, which sees the tile requests (your IP address and the map area) like any map website. The page loads its map library from cdnjs.cloudflare.com.
This website
hooksetwatch.com is hosted on Cloudflare Pages, which keeps standard server logs. The site sets no cookies and uses no analytics. The live bite times use your position only if you press "Use my location"; it is rounded to 0.01° and kept in your browser.
